YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA STARTER KIT: HOW EACH PLATFORM REALLY WORKS.

YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA STARTER KIT: HOW EACH PLATFORM REALLY WORKS.

I’ve always loved the idea of social media. It feels like the internet’s way of adding colour to everything we do, from building a business to sharing a random thought that inspires someone miles away.

Now, let’s take a step back from all the “bad sides” we often hear about, the algorithms, the pressure, the noise. Today, I want us to focus on the good part. The part that helps you grow, build your brand, and connect deeply with people who believe in what you do.

I’m Ebunoluwa, a Social Media Manager, Content and Brand Strategist, and a creative writer who refuses to let her storytelling muscle go rusty. So, here I am again, blending both worlds: creativity and strategy.

I’ll be sharing more articles like this (and health pieces too, you know I’m still a nurse at heart). But for today, let’s explore the vibrant world of social media platforms and what you need to understand before you start using them to build something meaningful.

We’ll look at the major ones: Instagram, LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and Facebook. Each one has its vibe, its goal, and its audience type.

Instagram: The B2C Visual Playground

Instagram is the platform of beauty, storytelling, and connection. If your brand speaks directly to people (B2C; Business to Customers), Instagram should be your playground.

Start by following creators in your niche. Watch how they build community, how they communicate, and how they share value. You’ll quickly realize that videos perform better here, but don’t panic if you’re not a video person, carousels are your best friend.

Carousels let you teach something, document your journey, or share personal insights in slides. The trick? Focus on storytelling. You don’t always need a fancy hook, just connect with your audience.

Your captions should sound like a conversation. Your visuals? Consistent and clear. And please, don’t forget to engage! Instagram rewards interaction, reply to comments, share stories, use polls, and let your personality shine.

LinkedIn: The B2B Powerhouse

LinkedIn is that digital boardroom where professionals meet ideas. You might feel like wearing a suit and grabbing a cup of coffee before logging in, and honestly, that’s not far from the truth.

If your brand serves other businesses (B2B; Business to Business) or focuses on personal branding, thought leadership, or career growth, LinkedIn is your home.

To get started, optimize your profile:

  • Add your headline: what you do, and who you help.
  • Include your school, organization, or company.
  • Use a clear headshot with a clean background.

Then, curate your content in two styles:

  • Copywriting posts; short, persuasive posts that sell your idea or service.
  • Content writing posts; long-form reflections or storytelling that express your thoughts and build connection.

On LinkedIn, storytelling is professionalism with soul. Share your lessons, your experiences, and the values that shape your work. You’re not just showing up for opportunities; you’re building credibility alongside.

X (Twitter): The Fast Lane for Ideas and Influence

X is chaos and brilliance in equal measure. It’s where opinions fly fast, but also where powerful brands grow, especially in Tech, Finance, Health, Business, and Web3.

If you want to grow here, don’t just tweet for the sake of tweeting. Build threads. Threads are short, connected tweets that tell a story or teach something.

For instance, if I’m writing about hypertension, I’d create a thread of 10–15 short tweets explaining the causes, symptoms, and prevention tips, each one short and engaging. That’s content strategy in microform.

X is perfect for building influence. You can join trending conversations, retweet insights, and share perspectives that reflect your expertise. You’ll get roasted sometimes, that’s part of the culture, but you’ll also build a strong, active audience if you’re consistent.

TikTok: The B2C Storytelling Stage

TikTok is where creativity and spontaneity thrives. It’s video-first, fast-paced, and full of opportunities for B2C brands, creators, and small businesses.

Think of it as the world’s most open stage, you can share tutorials, lifestyle moments, behind-the-scenes stories, or educational content in 15–60 seconds.

Brands grow fast here because of the platform’s massive reach. Whether you’re teaching skincare, explaining a business model, or talking aboutstudent life, TikTok rewards authenticity.

Pro tip: Don’t obsess over the comments. The algorithm pushes what resonates, not what’s perfect. Just keep creating and improving.

Facebook: The OG of All Platforms

Ah, Facebook, the original social media giant. I used to be obsessed with it! While I’m not as active anymore, Facebook still deserves respect.

It’s the platform that blends everything, business, community, lifestyle, and storytelling. You can share reels, long posts, host groups, or run your own business page.

It’s ideal for both B2C and community-focused brands. If you have a Facebook page, connect it to your Instagram so your content automatically posts on both. That’s double visibility with less effort.

Facebook may not be as trendy as TikTok, but its power lies in connection. People still form communities, join discussions, and support brands they trust.

Choose Your Platform, build gradually.

Each platform has its purpose, tone, and tribe. The real secret is knowing why you’re showing up and who you’re showing up for.

You don’t need to be everywhere. You just need to be intentional where you are. Whether it’s building a B2B brand on LinkedIn, connecting directly with consumers on Instagram, or growing your influence on X, the opportunities are endless when you show up with value.

And if you ever feel lost in the algorithms, remember this:
Social media isn’t just about posting alone, it’s about positioning.
It’s your digital storybook. Make every post a page worth reading even when you scroll by 10 years later.
